I really don't understand parents buying their children cars, but only if the child likes it! My kids will get whatever the budget affords, that will be relatively reliable, and safe. The less reliable the car, the less distance they can go if they decide to run away! Of course I live in a town of about 80,000, and it takes 15 minutes to get from one end to the other. So if they did break down, it wouldn't be hard to track them down.

I had a 1980 Toyota Tercel. Ripped seats, damaged trunk and body needed a pain job. But I bought it with my own money for $450 (in Los Angeles) and it was my pride and joy, cause it was all mine. Had it for two years, and fixed up a few things and sold it for $800. :)
