Rule of thumb for paying below sticker price?

Question:
Is there a rule of thumb for paying for a new car that's fair to both the dealer and consumer to cut through all the bickering?

I have £30k to spend on a car, which one?

I know the sticker price on the car window is pumped up for the suckers, but how much below that number should you offer to cut through hours of game playing?

depends on the salesman. I'd suggest going to one of the no haggle places. They have good prices that meet the needs of both. Otherwise, do some research and find out what the dealer paid. Have a fair price in mind and make it a point to tie up a salesman for as long as possible. After 4 or 5 hours, he'll wear down and want you gone. Price will fall.

Could someone tell me if since rover has gone bust are spares still available and would it be worth buying one

I don't know if there is an exact rule but here is what has worked for me and when I was a single woman..(we need all the help we can get, they think we have sucker written on our foreheads!)
I always say I am shopping around, and I do, and I leave, come back and say I am done shopping around, and I have it narrowed down, and am ready to buy, but am not sure where, I am a busy person, what is your absolute, absolute bottom line on this car....(have a notebook open to write it down)..then you get your bottom price..it works for me, good luck....

Depends on the vehicle. There is no rule of thumb that works for every vehicle at every dealer.

Would you like to buy some 17" rims??

Vehicles that are hot sellers and in high demand will sell at or near sticker price. Slow sellers or vehicles with good manufacturer incentives could easily sell below invoice price.

I am trying to buy a new car, but can't decide between Nissan Sentra, Vols wagon Jetta, or a Mitsubishi Eclips

Edmunds.com shows a TMV (True Market Value) price for each vehicle that represents a fair selling price for that vehicle, based on a number of factors. Although, you might be able to get a better price with hard bargaining, it's a good starting point for your price negotiations.

Should I buy this 1995 Chevrolet 1500 pickup?

For example, you can buy a Camry $2k UNDER dealer invoice. But a Mini Cooper you'd be lucky to get $100 off MSRP. For Scion and Saturn, you traditionally pay MSRP because they have "no-haggle" pricing.

3 cars to choose from. Which is the best?

Ignore the TMV listed at Edmunds.com. they are FALSE pricing. Guess who provides these prices? The GMs of dealerships. of course they're going to inflates prices so consumers end up paying more. For example, I got $7000 off my new Lexus RX350. but TMV is only $1000 off MSRP. which is ridiculous. You can walk in to a Lexus dealer right now and get $5000 off without so much as haggling.

Can I trust internet-based car loan sites or would my local bank be better?

Here's the strategy I use. go to carsdirect.com to see their pricing. Then use other buying services like Costco and AAA to get their pre-negotiated prces. Then take the printouts to the dealer and try to negotiate a lower price. If they don't budge, walk out. they will usually stop you and accept your offer. If they do not, then you can try another dealer or just go with Costco/AAA/Carsdirect.
