The first thing I do is listen to hear if the engine is ticking at all. Next, I check to see what might be leaking in and under the engine. Are the tires worn? Does the transmission shift smoothly into each gear as you accelerate and decelerate? Do the headlights and tail-lights work? Things that don't work, regardless of how simple you might thing they are to repair, should be taken as a sign that they might not be easy repairs at all.
