I've known several people that have and in my opinion, I'd at least check out a dealer who sells the used car you want as both new and used cars. Nowadays most dealers only sell the creme of the crop used cars that get on trade-ins, and you can get just as good a warranty as from carmax. In addition, who's going to know more about a manufacturer's car and how to repair it than the dealer? (at least in general). You could compare the same car you find used from the dealer to carmax. Also check http://www.edmunds.com and don't forget to run the VIN number at http://www.carfax.com no matter who you buy it from.
Check http://www.consumers.com and http://www.mycarstats.com for reliability ratings and owner experiences.
