it all depends on what your looking for. you know some people may want to save alot of gas so they will get a small car while others like alot of storage so they may get a wagon. it can go on and on.

Hey, don't feel compelled to spend the entire 20k.spend less, and that way you will have more money each month to invest..
With that being said, i think the best car would a very well cared for 2 or 3 year old Honda Accord or Civic, or Toyota Camry or Corrola, coming off lease.
If you can find the car had a woman driver, pick that car, women tend to do maintenance more than men.
If you want a new car, I suggest the above, or maybe a Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris.
Japanese cars, even if they are built in the USA, Mexico or Canada are built better than american cars.
I like Honda the best, because they have near toyota quality, but they generally look better and are more fun to drive..You have your choice of size, small medium or large in the Fit, Civic and Accord.
Avoid the american cars, they are built poorly...look at their lame resale values, if you dont believe me.

Since you want to go to a dealer, it sounds like you want to buy new. There are a lot of choices for under 20K but with that budget I would start with Toyota first, the Corolla and Yaris are both under 20K and super reliable and get good mileage. Scion is also by Toyota and you might want to look at those for under 20K. Also check out Hondas. Since 20K is on the low end of the car spectrum I am suggesting these so you can maximize you value.
