As late as 1990 I remember paying LESS than $1.00/gal while driving from New York to Illinois. It was not that big of a deal. Regular was in the high .80s to low .90 in some gas stations. Silver was 10 cents more and super was 20 cents higher.
So paying 90/$1.00/$1.10 for Reg\Plus\Super was pretty much the norm and that was 7 years after your question. So that movie is definitely right in its prices
