It all depends on the state you are in. I am in Florida, and I bought a used car, and it seemed to take forever for the new tags to come. It took over a month, I believe. I thought they forgot about me, and I was about to go to the DMV myself, but then the tags came in the mail.
Be patient, they should arrive soon. In the meantime, just keep bugging them for temp tags.
