The top mark Japanese cars were the most reliable and affordable. However, if you are thinking about a Merc you can't be that interested in affordable! I had a large top of the range Nissan bought in 1997, which I never had to spend a penny on other than for routine servicing; its still doing the same for my daughter now. If you want a top notch car try Lexus.

Most luxury cars like Mercedes, BMW, Lexus and Cadillac are fairly cheap in that vintage, but be prepared to spend a lot on to keep them running properly. Mercedes parts are ridiculously expensive and your local mechanic probably won't be able to work on that Lexus.
