Buying/leasing/driving question?

01/02 VW's - Expect electrical problems, and overall poor reliability. You do not need carfax for that. Do a little more important research (Consumer Reports - Auto Forums online - MSN autos) and you will realize you are buying someone elses problems. VW's are expensive to fix, and require special tools and software. Parts can also be hard to come by, and VW service centers have not gotten rave reviews as of late.

I'm buying a car.. for $4000 less than retail value.. is that bad?

Admittedly they are nicely engineered and put together well, but once you drop a grand or two on repairs and it sits in the shop for 2-3wks, you will be a little less in love with it. Insurance costs are also on the higher side for younger drivers.

- State DMVs. Very slow to respond. They only have details on registrations and brands - when a car has major damage a brand is added. Also, they will only have data for one state - if the car has moved they can't help you. Fees vary by state.

Legal advice needed - car dealership being difficult accepting return of a faulty car.?

- The best source is Carfax. They collect data from over 20000 sources - and still they don't have everything. However, it's the most comprehensive source.

For free - since it costs the DMVs and Carfax - nobody provides it for free.

What is the best way to sell a car you still owe money on?

When dealers buy Carfax reports they pay a price that allows them to redistribute the report - so ask the dealer. You'll find thousands for free on Cars and AutoTrader and most dealers will provide a Carfax report on any car on their lot.
