What kind of gas mileage does a 4.7 L V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee engine get?

Question:
I am looking at buying a 1999-2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 L V8 engine. It claims to get 16 city / 21 highway MPG. Does anyone own one who could give me an idea of what it really gets. Also anything you could tell me about reliability, maintenence costs or any input would be helpful. Thanks

Lawrence KS Automobile Dealers?

You can expect to get about 10-14 in the city and 15-20 on the highway. Maybe even less if it has not been maintained well.

I had the 4L straight 6 and routinely got 12-14 MPG.

Car Loan and Fiancing a Car?

I have an 02 Jeep. I usually only get about 15 mpg. This is an amazing car. I have had mine for almost two years and never have any problems with it. I just had to replace my automatic window on the drivers side and this is the first thing I have ever had to do to it. Amazing car! Would totally recommend it!

What sort of car would you want to own in the future?and why?

According to my friend, who is an engineer for Daimler-Chrysler, the EPA estimates on SUVs are overinflated. Apparently the way they check highway ratings is to place the car on a type of treadmill at a constant speed of 55 MPH with nothing taxing the engine (like air conditioning). Ditto that for city, but drive it at 30 MPH and stop and sit every once in a while. His rule of thumb is to reduce the EPA numbers by 20% and that'll give you a ball-park accurate read, so in the case of the Jeep Grand Cherokee that would be about 13 MPG city and 17 MPG highway.

Can you please suggest a car for me to look at?

i own a 2002 mercury mountaineer that has 4wd and v8. It generally gets 16-18 mpg on the highway, however, if i drive 55 mph instead of 70, I can increase it nearly 5 mpg. Unfortunately, I don't care to cause an accident by driving 15mph slower than everyone else around me. The mountaineer seats 7 people, tho, so it is a little larger than the Jeep. Mainly, you just need to be cautious as to how many miles is on it, how it has been maintained, and make sure you have an oil change, filter change and even clean spark plugs will make a world of difference in your fuel consumption.

Can I trust internet-based car loan sites or would my local bank be better?

If you're looking at the 4.7 L you're looking at 15 City and 19 Highway (which means more like 13 and 17)

The 16 and 21 you are referring to is for the 6 cyl 4 L model.

It's fairly reliable but if you're concerned with low maintenance you should also consider a Pathfinder.

'79 el camino...?

My girlfriend has an '04 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 V-8. Her's is not the HO model, which is something that will vary the MPG. According to the on-board computer, hers is averaging 15.5 MPG based on about 70% city and 30% hwy. The V-8 is rated a little better than the l-6 for the reason it doesn't have to work as hard to pull the vehicle along. Hope this helps.
