I lived there for 9 years. It is far from 'happy'. There are bums EVERYWHERE. Forget walking down the street in peace because you won't be able too. Twice I decided to count the amount of times I was hit up for so-called, spare change. The first time was 17 times per hour and the 2nd time was 25. SF is also a very mean-sprited, militant conformist state. Do not EVER think for yourself unless you want the wrath of the "liberal" on you. SF has a school yard mentality which is "don't say a thing unless you know that everyone agrees with you".
