Well american car parts are usualy cheaper, so you probly want an american one since chances are some parts will need to be fixed. I own a car dealership. What catches your eye more prices that end 999 or 980 or 500 etc.?
With $1000 it will be a very hard thing to do to get a very good reliable car if you are trying to buy it privately whether it is at an auction or off someone hands( I would say don't buy a used car past 10 years of the present year And over 100,000 miles). However if you are thinking down payment and car note then I say if it is used then stick with the foreign name brands because their value holds longer and they last longer also. So with that said I would say that a Honda Civic is a very good choice, a Saturn ( American made) but reliable. I still see saturns on the road form 95! If you can get your hands on a Chrysler PT Cruiser they are not expensive whether new or used and they are 4 cylinder cars ( 4 cylinders are best on gas mileage!). And last I would say either a Nissan Sentra or an Altima ( I love the 98 version). You can also check and see if you have a Carmax dealership within your area they usually advertise cheap affordable and reliable cars. I hope that this helps

Make sure you take someone with you when are ready to buy your first car. A second opinion is always good. If your limit is around $1000, then maybe you can visit a few websites and research a used car you may want to buy. Will the prices of cars in india come down after 2007 budget ?
Before you buy your 1st car, please read this article:http://www.forbes.com/2007/02/23/cars-te...
Obviosly $1000 isn't going to buy one of these cars, but it should give you some ideas as to what to look for in your car & you may want to consider using your cash as a down payment.
$1000 doesn't buy much, & whatever it does buy, will cost more to maintain & repair
hope this helps
