Of course my situation is typical. I want to trade in my car (that Im upside down in) for a less expensive car for lower payments......any suggestions....Someone said to make sure the dealer actually pays off my car instead of them adding on the remainder balance...any other suggestion.....and just for the sake of asking...what kind of car do you recommend?? I have 2 kids..bigger..so no baby chairs, and I travel for my boss. So suggest something that has great gas mileage (even though my boss pays for my gas)

First, walk into the dealership claiming NO TRADE-IN. Go thru the normal cat and mouse game to get them down to their bottom dollar (Don't go a penny more than 20% off of the window sticker). Once the deal is made, tell them you just gave it some thought and you'd like to go ahead and trade in your current vehicle to get rid of one payment.
Then you can see by dollars how much it goes down or up.
