Is it a "new" car if it had 512 miles?

Question:
I bought a car from a dealer that sold it as new. The title has never been transferred (checked on carfax.com) but unfortunately I didn't know until after the transaction was complete and I started the car up that it had a little over 500 miles on it.

What small suv do you think is better?

While the car was still in excellent, or "new" shape, I am just wondering if I got hosed. I know they always says when you drive the car off the lot it loses a lot of its value.

What's a good deal for a BMW 335i coupe with manual and sport package payments should be?

YES it is a new car, to be straight and to the point and answer your question. A new car is defined as a vehicle that has a MSO (Manufacturer Certificate of Origin) and not been titled. This new car you bought could have 500 miles on it for a few reasons ...

1. The dealer does let people test drive the vehicles, sometimes overnight.

What is the best car you had or have and the wost?

2. Sometimes the cars are moved from dealer to dealer and traded. (A dealer might need a certain vehicle ... example a new Honda Accord EX in a specific color ... they don't have it but the customer says if you can get me one tomorrow I will buy from you ... the dealer gets on a computer set up for the dealers and see that another dealer 350 miles away has that vehicle ... they call and they dealer says they will let that dealer have it but want a Civic Si in return ... that dealer drives it to the dealer with the Accord because it is cheaper than trucking it and drives the Accord back)

How to negotiate?

3. The car might have been driven by a Sales Mgr. or Sales person as a demo and you happen to have similar taste as them and picked out their car.

I have a '97 honda civic...?

4. The car could have been delivered to a customer on spot financing (where the dealer speculates they can get a customer financed but do not have approval from the bank) and a few days to a week later they couldn't and had to get the car back. (Yes it would still be a new car because the car was never titled)

I'd like to buy a new small suv that gets good gas mileage and doesn't cost too much. Any suggestions?

5. Rare occassions occur where an event is in town where the Manufacturer or Dealer sponsors the event. Cars are often loaned to display and sometimes be driven. An example of this is Buick sponsors several golf events around the country. Tiger Woods is a spokesman for Buick. He is provided with a new Buick at every even he attends. (My wife says him leaving Dairy Queen in a new Buick near our house where a golf tourney was going on). Do you he drives from event to event across the country in a Buick? Do you think they ship a Buick around for him. The local dealer provides them for him and then they sell it as a new vehicle, which it is.

The Best 4 seater convertible?

Each new car is different ... sure most have 15 miles or less on them when sold. The bottom line is you had the chance to test drive the vehicle and look at the odometer. You were presented a Federal Odometer Disclosure statement, which is required by the Federal Govt. and states the mileage on the car, and signed it before taking delivery of the vehicle. You could have used that as a negotiation tool but didn't notice it.

Is there a way to buy a car to immediately sell or trade-in and not pay sales tax.?

You should call the dealership and talk with one of the sales managers. You should tell him/her about what happened and you didn't realize the mileage. Ask how the vehicle got 512 miles. They might be able to tell you it was a dealer trade ... or whatever. Ask (nicely) if there is anything they could do to help you. Maybe your first service for free since it will be coming up sooner.

What questions should I ask when looking to purchase a second hand car?

The dealer does not have to do anything for you as they sold you a new car under new factory warranty and you signed the odometer statement. If you demand like the other people mentioned it is going to make them not want to help you at all. You shouldn't expect money back because the dealer is not going to do that. Like I said maybe ask for some free services. Hope this helps and God Bless.

I would like to purchased a used jeep wrangler no older than 1999 with real glass side windows.?

A lot of times a dealer will have a car driven from one dealer to another for a lot of different reasons, maybe someone wanted it then turn it down after the dealer drove it. 500 miles is not a lot of miles so I would not worry about it. I would however get your dealer to make note of the mileage for warranty reasons, they owe you an extra 500 miles past your mileage warranty end. Good luck and stand your ground with your dealer/sales person.

Looking for a nice sized car or SUV with good gas mileage 25-30 MPG?

I guess if it runs fine and is in "new" condition it probably won't matter a year or more from now assuming you plan to keep it for at least a few years. It is annoying though.

Need Advice on Buying a Used Car with a Used Trade In?

No it's not new, it would have maybe up to 50 miles, this is a demo or it's been driven from one dealer to another, like the other guy said, raise a stink, try to get something out of them.

Which subs should i buy?

If the vehicle was never titled and has less than 1000 miles it is still considered new. The warrenty starts when you buy it.
Ethically, the mileage should have been disclosed and the reason why the miles are on it. The vehicle could have come from another dealer or it was a Manager's or owner's demo.

Ford F-150 FX4 or Toyota Tundra?

500 miles is not much at all. a lot of people have testdrove it, and that can add up wuickly. don't worry your car is still concidered a new car!

How safe is it to buy cars off ebay (not getting riped off)?

the car is still new. and the carsalesman that answered the question above needs to relook into the warranty coverage. every warranty out there starts at 0 miles and goes to 36,000 miles regardless of the miles on the car at the time of purchase. (or whatever that manufacturers warranty is) 500 miles is not many miles when it comes to a new car. out of the last 5 cars ive bought only one had less than 300 miles on it. most dealerships allow all of their cars to be driven. often we will let a customer take a car home overnight to see if they like it. as a result cars get a few miles on them. if it was traded from one dealer to another that can also put miles on it.
a car is considered new until it has been titled. period. even demo's are still considered new cars, ive had cars w/ over 4000 miles on them and they are still considered a "new" car. yes i will discount them more because of the miles but they are still a new car. and when i say titled that means when the dealership sells the car and puts your name on the title. it doesnt have to show up on carfax or really even at the state yet. most states take 30-90 days to process their titles depending on how busy that state is.
the dealership should have had an odometer statement and on your titling statement it should have had the miles on it. if it didnt have the 500 miles on it you can complain but your not going to get much out of it. a free oil change or something like that more than likely. even if you use the standard mileage cost of 0.15 per mile your only looking at $75.00.
as far as the other person saying you should avoid buying from a dealer? you have more legal rights buying from a dealer than you have from an individual. you have more guarantee's buying from a dealer than you do an individual, and generally a dealer can show you what work has been done to their cars (in writting) than most individuals can. plus they will offer you service after the fact compared to an individual buyer.
