Question about purchasing car in NH and moving to CA.?

I am purchasing a car where I live in NH (where there is no sales tax) and moving to California (where there is 7.75% Sales tax)in a month or so. My friend was telling me that if you move to CA within 6 months of purchasing a car they apply the sales tax to your purchase and you have to pay them that. I would assume this is upon them inspecting it for CA emissions? If this is the case could I get away in Cali for 6 mos. and not getting CA emissions?

Your friend is correct that sales tax would be due on the car. They wouldn't have you pay it at the emissions station, that is a different situation. The tax would be collected when you do your title work and get your plates at the DMV.
