I would look around for something with less (way less!) miles. Even if you have to pay a little bit more, it will be worth it in the long run not to have a car that is constantly breaking down on you. My husband recently bought me a 2001 Mitsubishi Spyder convertible that had 30,000 miles on it. He paid around $11,000 for it and it runs like a charm. Look around - you can find better deals, even if you have to pay a little more - you get what you pay for.

How long would this take?

Yes it will, probably sooner than you think. Find something with less miles.

too much money for that many miles.also that car is almost eight years old(they come out in the end of the year before the model year.that car was actually made in 1999.).you can find lower mileage cars for less than that.

First off, why did it need a new paint job? Sounds like a car that was involved in an accident. Does it have a "clean title"? In real world terms, yes, it will break down unless you keep up with all the maintenance. Take the car to a mechanic for a "pre-sale evaluation". This will run about $250-$450, but most dealerships will reimburse you for the costs if you buy the car. If they will not let you take it to a mechanic for the evaluation, walk away from the deal! No, better RUN! A little prevention up-front will be worth the cost down the road.

For a used car is highway miles better than having city miles?

In my own opinion too much for too little. Way too old. However, if you can get enough info on the car, you can go to Blue Book.com and check out what the car is really worth. Give it a shot.
