First of all take it to a mechanic and find out if its ok, and not a lemon ... there are lemon laws in a lot of states ... make sure it hasn't been in an accident where you are going to have a lot of repair bills. Don't take it to a dealership. If you purchased a car ,new or used it is the dealership's responsibility to transact all the necessary documents to the dmv . If you traded in a car, you can usually transfer your plates from the previous car. (You will need old registration). You do have to register the vehicle if the dealership didn't do it for you. When you go, you will want to ask the DMV what to bring, <specially if you purchased it out of state>, which usually consists of a bill of sale, odometer statement, drivers license, and proof of insurance. I hope you are not from North America... it kinda scares me that you may have just drove away without insurance! I'm not sure where you are and the legalities from there, but I can tell you that with Canadian law, we must register a vehicle immediately and cannot drive it away until it has insurance. The only exception is when using a plate of the vehicle you traded in, or recently sold, that still has valid insurance. The registration of the newer vehicle must be taken care of within ten days. The licence plate and registration will be taken care of at any insurance office (not the DMV).
