For the nearly $15000 you will be spending, you can get a Civic, Corolla, or a Mazda3 if you go easy on the options. The MPG is very close or even better with the manual transmissions, and they are a lot peppier (130/140/150 hp vs 105/109hp).

Between those two I would go with the Yaris based on it's styling. They do have similar specs so it reallys comes down to style and comfort.

You should also take a look at the Nissan Versa. It has a slightly larger engine available. It's also slightly larger.
