Octane ratings are available in your owners manual. If you don't have an owners manual, usually 87 octane will suit you fine, unless you drive a fast sports car, then I would suggest a 93 octane fuel.
Your fuel gauge will say Unleaded fuel only, or Diesel Fuel only if you are wondering what kind of fuel to use. Another indicator, look for spark plugs...if there are none, it is a diesel.
