What are the advantages/disadvantages of purchasing a vehicle that was a 'previous daily rental?'?

Question:
For example, our local Toyota dealer has a 2004 Toyota Sienna Minivan marked as 'previous daily rental' on the lot for around $19k, with only 22,000 miles on it. What can I expect from a previous rental like this? Does it make a difference that it is now coming off of a Toyota dealer's lot and not the 'Ma and Pa's Used Cars' lot around the corner?

The advantage is that the dealership most likely leased the vehicle out and it may come with a warranty.

Mitsubishi Lancer $99/month? New York State?

The disadvantage is that there where maybe hundreds of different drivers, and driving styles, for that one vehicle. If you've rented a car and got that $12 a day full coverage insurance, you cant tell me you drove it like a $17k car you bought with your hard earned money.

Is it a good idea to buy a customized car off eBay or do it yourself?

My advice, get a mechanic (one who does not work for the dealership) to check out the vehicle. Get the works done on it, it will cost a little, but it's better than paying a lot later on down the road.

Therefore - Even a fully loaded Sienna, which retails around 30K, is only worth 20K on resale immediately after purchase.

Just need Craig's list help---?

I purchased my vehicle from Toyota, that was previously a rental. It came with an extended warranty, roadside assistance, and was Toyota Certified. My only concern is the amount of miles it had (2003 model with 50,000) and I have since put 30,000 on it... Overall I am satisfied, there is not much difference between buying a rental, although many people have driven it, more maintenance has to go into the car, than if it had been owned by one person. So go for it!
