A co-worker of mine was looking for his first car and found out he could afford a new Chevy Colorado truck. He was all set up with the loan but found out that his insurance payments would be $300+ per month. He couldn't afford truck payments and insurance on a new truck. I would look around in the local paper for a reliable car in the 1998-2001 age. You can plug in various cars to the insurance websites and see what you would be paying. Keep in mind that if you get a loan for a car they will most likely make you get full coverage insurance until you pay of the loan.

I would buy a Mazda 3, lot of bang for the buck, rated very well in consumer reports, comes standard with wheels instead of hubcaps, radio and other controls on the steering wheel.
