I've rented a focus and own an Astra (both current models, but neither the high-performance versions).

Do dealers have to report that a car was a rental prior to selling it? what laws state they do if so?

Looks-wise and handling wise I would go for the Astra. I hired a Focus and an Astra from Enterprise a year ago within a few months of each other and found the Astra to be a very solid, well performing car. On the strength of that, I bought one.

Also, the Focus has been around longer, meaning that you are more likely to be driving an out of date car sooner. The Astra on the other hand has just been given a minor facelift and is around until at least 2009. You'll be driving a current model for longer!

Def the astra. looks loads better. The focus looks too much like any other model, can't say that about the astra.
