What is the best overall used car to get, considering the following:?

What small to midsize car has the overall best reliability (everyday commute and 500+ mile road trips), gas mileage, ease/cost to maintain, and safety.
I'll either spend 4-5k for something simple to last for now, or may go for 9-10k range to get something more for long term. I have an explorer now, which i really like, but its not feasible for everyday driving.

I think that if you want to stay in that 4-5K price range you need to be looknig for a early ninties to late eighties Nissan sentra or compairable, i.e. honda accord, civic, toyota corolla, camry. The problem with these cars newer are, they really hold there value, and it will be tough to find one cheap.We owned a 1988 Nissan Sentra base, with about 280,000 miles on it, it got 45 MPG and never had any problems, not one problem. If you want ot stay in an American car good luck, but if so i would be looking for a base model Impala, cavalier, grand prix, any of these three get grreat milage, and are basically matinace free. Plus you could get alot newer car if you bought american, due to them not holding value. Any car wtih the motor 3.1 or 3.8 by general motors, will have very little problems. BEWARE OF THE 2000 TO PRESENT GRAND AM they are a terrible car.

I bought a 2002 kia, optima in 2003 for these very same reasons and it has been the best car I have ever had.I paid around 6,000 for it. No problems so far. Great mileage and very reliable plus you can get a great warranty if you buy it new enough. Hope this helps!! Claire

no one car maker is all that much better than the others, the main thing with a used car is was it taken care of, if a car is taken care of it can last forever, just find a good clean car that runs good and you should be fine.
