Detroit keeps trying to sell image (sporty cars, tough-looking tricks, etc.) and educated middle class people don't shop for image, they shop for high-quality and reliability which is what Toyota and Honda have been offering for over 30 years. And the reality is that many "Japanese" vehicles are made right here in the USA.

maybe because there cars gas millage has not improved from 10 years ago! a 1997 cavalier gets the same millage as 2007 avero wow that's sad a 1997 metro,compared to the avero's 37mpg stomped it at 43mpg(that's with the 4cly the 3 was 49mpg)as a comparison a 97 Toyota corolla had a 1.6 liter engine and got 35mpg hwy now in 2007 it has a 1.8 and gets 41mpg,,,,, American cars better catch up,not to mention the foreign cars last longer

General motors has the trail blazer because of its price. everything else is higher than the competition... thats why they dont sell well.I would say perception has quite a bit to do with it. Ironically, GM and other domestics have reached and passed some of their foreign competitors in some vehicle segments, yet you don't hear the media harp on that. Some of this is attributed by people who always like seeing the giant fail. Walmart-syndrome, where people just dislike a corporation without any viable reason, rather, "just because", and I personally believe GM is one of them.

Another attribute I believe might be interiors which GM has/is currently improving. Much better quality materials go a long way to intepret quality. Case in point, VW which in the industry is regarded as having one of the best interiors in quality and materials, and research shows them on top of consumer's perception of quality, when in reality, they come in near the end in reliability surveys, go figure.

Share platforms greater, but they still need diversity from other GM brands.smooth-out those engines & transmissions and see the buyers roll in. no new GM model should be below the level of what Saturn is putting out.
