If the car has a lien from the credit co the car pond owners will contact them. If the car is worth it the lien holder will get the car out of pond. Whatever charges are owed the lien holder will add to the balance of what you owe and bill you for it.

The registered owner gets first crack at getting it back, if they want to pay the impound charges. The lienholder, if there is one, is next. If the lienholder pays for the impound charges and takes back the car, they will sell it again. And then probably sue the dickens out of the registered owner for the money!

towed- and runs sitting at junk yard parted and sold in peices
towed- not running at junk yard smashed or parted for good parts.
they can't sell it unless they have title
the only way they can put lien on it is if they did service for you with it(ie tow or repairs) but the lein is only for so long before they get rid of it.
