Question:
Hi, I am planning to buy a used car in another city ( i live in san francisco and the car i want is 25 miles away). I was wondering, if i wanted to have a mechanic inspect the car, how would i do that? Should i trust the mechanic the dealer reccomends?
Answers:
i want to be a model for cars how can i?
Make contact with the mechanic first. Tell him what you would like him to do. Expect to pay him for his time and energy. And attempt to schedule an appointment with him...within a reasonable amount of time.
Then go car shopping. So you are within a week of the appointment at the mechanic, select a vehicle. Do your best deal with the sales person and say that you will take the car. But your offer is pending an inspection by your mechanic. (Expect to maybe put a little bit of earnest money down, to show that you are serious).
If the dealer balks or tries to convince you that you HAVE to take the car today, or it will be sold... just tell him that you won't respond to that high pressure kind of tactic and that you can buy from any other dealer. It doesn't have to be from him. Then make it clear that you are ready to buy the vehicle, upon a satisfactory inspection from your mechanic. Give them the date and time you will want to bring it to your mechanic...and arrange for the specifics.
Anyone know of dealers that buy used cars in the Philadelphia area?
If the car salespeople give you grief, or a hard time about this...then don't buy from them. If thats how they treat you when they are trying to EARN your business.. How will they treat you once they've GOTTEN your check and you've signed the papers.
If they still don't want you to take it, then ask them to include IN WRITING a 15 day FULL MONEY BACK -no questions asked- return policy to the deal.

And always be ready to walk away. Remember its just sheet metal and plastic. Thats all the car is. There are other ones JUST like it all over the place.

You need your own mechanic to look at the car. You can do this a couple of ways. but first when you sign the sales agreement make it conditional upon your mechanic inspecting it. If the mechanic you have can't go to the dealership then most dealerships will allow you to take the car to him. The AAA also provides a car inspection service. But you need to be a member.Do not use the dealer recommended mechanic. He may be honest etc. but he has connections to the dealership who send him business. You can give the dealership a deposit on the car but MAKE SURE YOU GET THE CONDITIONS IN WRITING.
Trust me I used to sell new and used cars for a very reputable dealership. But often cars were just cleaned up and put out for sale. They knew the brakes were about to go or the transmission needed work too!
