Hi, i'm 16 nearly 17 and in the UK. I have been given a budget of £7000 ($14000) to choose a good first car as my pressie. However, i don't have the faintest idea of what to choose. What car would you recommend, that takes advantage of the entire budget, and is good for a beginner? Any help appreciated. x

HiYour in the UK so forget all the US advice they don't ahve the one problem which will decide the car for you - INSURANCE.
Forget anything bigger than 1.4 unless you want to spend £2000 on insurance too.
I recommend a visit to www.youngmarmalade.com and look at what they can do for you (or your dad!!)

Somethings that has gets good gas mileage & something that's reliable.should go for a ford focus. petrol is a def as it picks up speed quicker den a diseal and plus its small and handy when moving quickly in small spaces. You will still need to decide if you want an avg insurance price depending on the cars engine, but would recommend a 1.6 first.

Before you ignore the idea of getting this amazing little vehicle, just think of its uses...sure it ain't the best for shopping at your local tesco's.but when some twat is tail-gating you down a country lane...just swing round the turret and point the gun at the driver...then see what they do!

I'm not sure what cars are available in UK. And which cars are most driven.I'm located in US, so.very different.
I'd say for a 17 years old kid.
Something compact yet on the safe side.
It depends on what kind of driver you are but,
If hondas are available, go for 2004 RSX (AKA integra)
or even a civic. They are pretty fun to drive.
If you are more on the comfort side,
look into camry. An used camry of course.
Besides that, you should have a choice of gettin'
an Audi or Volkswagen.
Over here in US, both Audi and Volkswagen has
it's reputation of not lasting above 60~70k miles.
(Meaning it will have mechanical / electrical problems)
Or, a different choice would be.
Go out and buy yourself a 5~8 years old Honda or Toyota
that's pretty good taken care of. Save yourself and your parents some money.

A Volkswagen Polo would be a good bet too. Try the new Vauxhall Corsa, it is getting good reviews. You can test drive all of these before you buy.
Ring a few insurance companies for quotes. New drivers are considered a higher risk so shop around. Happy motoring.

I drove a 1.25 Fiesta Zetec a few years ago and it was very fast for the size of engine and will be cheap for you to insure and road tax. I have also driven the Toyota Yaris which was also fun to drive.Keep the car small and you can almost buy a new one with a year or two of warrenty left which should make driving cheap. BUT most important thing is to check out the insurance first.

If I was you Alice I would invest in a new toyota Aygo. I own a company and 3 of my staff run them as company cars and they are great. They are cheap to run great to drive and have got tons of bits like ipod connector etca and super reliable. Oh and they do free insurance!I drive a Mercedes and a Mini (London) in the week and have a Ferrari for the weekend so I was surprised when I picked up an aygo in red how cool it was for £6500.
