Actually, when I say "New Car", it will more than likely be a used car. I am currently a student and I don't have a lot of money. I live in the mountains so snow and Ice are very common during the winter. I am bent between the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, And Ford Escape. I am in desperat need of advive. Thanks.

I am not sure if you can call this a "small SUV", but I would suggest a Jeep Wrangler. It's cheap, great for bad weather, economical, and the repairs don't cost as much as if you were to buy an import.i own a repair shop,in Tennessee,and i do a lot of work for people,id have to recommend the ford escape right now or the forester,either one of them in my book are really good vehicles to own ,both are very reliable,and not too expensive to operate,,, also i judge a vehicle by how much i have to work on it,and i don't get a lot of these to repair,,so there pretty good as far as cost go,,i live in the mountains also and there are a lot of those around here ,and i have seem them go in the bad weather,,they do good,,i think between the two though i would have to recommend the the ford escape,there probably the best of the ones you have to choose from,if i was you id go drive a few of them,after all the test drive is free,,and see what you think,i think you,ll like the way the escape runs and drives,but its fun to go test driving,,good luck,i hope this help,s.
i suggest the honda crv awsome speed,feels like gliding low monthly payments and it does not cost an arm and a leg to pay for gas . plus a whole lot of other stuff you know ike quality.

Escapes come in hippie hybrid or American style...the forester sucks and the rav4's are really crappy on the road(stiff suspension like being in old horse carriage or something)should i buy [3-year old astra] OR [5 year old corolla or civic] ?
The Toyota and Subaru are the most reliable of the bunch. They are both 4 cylinders, so will get better mileage. Of course that means neither one is gonna win you any pink slips at the local drag strip either. The Ford has managed to eke out average reliability. But it is now a 5+ yr old design that trails the imports in terms of refinement and resale value.What are actual prices paid for Honda CRV EX 2007?
As far as off road ability, I do not believe any of them have a low gear. The RAV4 is probably the least capable, with the Subaru being best and the Ford somewhere in the middle.

I get the impression this vehicle will be in your possession for several years. I would stick to the Subaru or Toyota as they have proven to be very reliable. A CRV would also be a good choice. The Ford had a lot of issues with recalls and quality problems its first year, so I would definitely avoid an 01/02.
