Poor dog. Seriously, in a crate all day and only let out for lunch? That is so cruel. The dog is in a state of frustration and loaded down with stress! The chewing stems from frustration and lack of companionship. Recommend to your friend that when she is home to devote at a minimum of 20 minutes to her pet and only to her pet for that period of time. Choose a dog toy(only one) and play with her with that toy. The dog will learn to love that toy because of the owner's scent and the happiness it reminds him/her of. It he/she decides to chew during the day he/she will head for the toy in most instances.....the crate must go except for travel.But a shock Coler on this .Great Dane. at lunch time,

I think she needs to go home at lunch, let the dog know she is coming back home, let heri/him out to go to the bathroom and stretch it's legs.
