You can put $50,000 in a car and if someone is only willing to give you $20,000 for it then that's all it's worth. As for the Chevelle, unless there's something extra special about it my best guess is it's worth somewhere between $500 and $1500 and if it's really bad, the $500 figure is probably closer to real worth. From your description, I would say it's a parts donor car.Simply yes, that is to much. and plus in 1970 that got the new ugly grille.

All the answers above are valid, especially the one about how much it is worth is how much someone is willing to pay for it... that is the fundamental basis for a free market economy.
Clearly, by asking this question, you are not experienced enough to be looking to invest a year or two and 30K+ to make this a Barret-Jackson resale/profit getting machine. Take the advice of those who mentioned VIN#s if you even think you can fix this up and sell it for a profit like that.

A) Authentic... VIN#s are real, not fakes, and truly indicate big-block and manual tranny.

C) You have the time 1-5 years part time, 1-2 years full time, and CASH (5K purch + 20-50K depending on area and goal)...
D) No matter what comes from all this invested time and money, you will still be smiling...

1) Know up front if you are building it for resale to a private party, taking it to auction, restoring it for show/competition, restoring it for a clean authentic personal Muscle weekend car, or keeping it as authentic as possible because all the cool, expensive, hard to find parts are there and make it worth the 5K up front price but you are building it only as authentic as cost effective, and doing it the way you will enjoy it most.
2) IF all the above are a go, and this is your dream project/car, and you do not have family, work, other things likely to derail and reprioritize, then just get out there, put a deposit down, and get it inspected, and go for it!!!!
