I need it as a "station car" that will take me to and from my local commuter train station 2 miles from my house. It will also be used to drive my wife to and from her job one day a week (about 35 miles total) and for local errands. What's reliable and cheap? I don't need any frills.

get a used car. any car that runs. if u use it strictly for what you said, a car around 6-7 k will do the job for a couple of years.

Dont get toyota or honda. They are not reliable and are expensive. Stick to good old US like Chevy HHR, Dodge Caliber and PT Cruiser, which are less than 15K. Dont let your money leave the US.95-98 escort, look for granny cars, they usually have under 50K and are extremly cheap, great on gas too!

First, to the geographically challenged who say not to buy a Honda Civic because it is not North American. If you buy a Civic in the U.S., it is made in Ohio. If you buy one in Canada, it is made in Allistion. Sorry, no Japan for you. In fact, only the S2000, Fit and CRV are made in Japan. Everything else from Honda is domestic.So, on that note, buy a Civic. I commute about 100km a day in a 1992 Civic. When I bought it I thought it would only own it for 6-8 years, well, here it is almost 15 years later and the thing drives like it was new.

i own a repair shop,and the two best ones right now on the market are the Toyota corollas or the Nissan sentras,and i prefer the sentra over the Toyota ,because there more reliable ,and also more fuel efficient ,and over all better cars than the Toyota is right now,and you can find a good sentra for a real good price,if i was you id buy a new model one with low miles but get it used,for no more than your going to be using this car ,it would last you and her for many years to come,and they have plenty of room in them also , i have one of the older ones,and id rather drive it as anything i own,and i have an 85 model Porsche that doesn't drive as good as it does,what you need to do is go look at one ,and then decide,i think you,d like what Nissan has to offer these days,good luck i hope this help,s.What is your comfort level with Lucerne or Montego in terms of reliability?
