Historically, Ford's have been more reliable, more of a work truck, and have sold much more. The Ford F-Series has even passed the Volkswagen Beetle to capture the number one selling spot in history.

Chevrolets on the other hand, have been much sportier, feature a better, more stylish interior, and are easier to customize. Chevrolet's Silverado (previously the C/K-Series, C for 2-Wheel Drive and K for 4-Wheel Drive, and the Scottsdale) would be the one to get if you want to fix it up and don't plan on using it as a workhorse. There's also a GMC version, called the Sierra, which is more luxurious and slightly more reliable.

The Chevrolet Colorado (previously the S-10 and LUV, and the GMC version is the Canyon, previously called the Sonoma) is said to be okay (we had the S-10), but it's built partly by Isuzu, a Japanese company (which has its own version, called the I-Series, previously the Hombre), which would account for this. The previous versions were said to be pretty much junk, and were rated by Consumer Reports among the ten worst vehicles of the past thirty years.

The Ford Ranger has also gotten better, but it's hard to find aftermarket parts for the 4-Wheel Drive version (we currently own a 2000 and have owned a 1986 model. When we tried to find a suspension lift kit, the cheapest one was a 2" for $1600 which is absolutely outrageous), but it's also partly built by Mazda, another Japanese company. Reliability has been better than the Chevrolet's and GMC's, but nowhere near as good as the Japanese mini pickups.
Among the mini pickups, the Toyota Tacoma (previously just called the Toyota Pickup, of which we had a 1987) is the way to go. It's very reliable, very powerful, excellent for off-road, and has an okay interior and styling. Beware, though, while the cab and front end are excellent, the box is made of cheap steel and will rust extremely easily, which is why so many older ones have wooden boxes or metal flatbeds now.
So it's up to you. Ford for work and reliability, Chevrolet/GMC for sport and customization (and Toyota for a small truck).
