Well out of the 4000 or so customers I have had in The EU I can tell you which ones have the most complaints and which ones have the least.I built a VW diesel out of scrap cars and with a few tweaks it got 50+mpg towed my full size Chevy Van when it broke down.

We have a ford 2 litre turbo diesel escort now it is pretty good but has had a few problems, little things like the seals on the fuel pump do wear out and will leak. Simple to fix if you know how but take it to a garage and you can get taken for a very expensive ride.
The inter-cooler is really good but the water pump is a nightmare to replace.
Future maintenance things to keep in mind.
VW is good but repairs can be very expensive such it the case with all German cars.
Keep in mind a little TLC and preventive maintenance will keep any car on the road.
