I am looking to buy my first car can anyone give me advice on where to look eg: best dealers, good car to buy, what I need to look out for to ensure I dont get ripped off.

Hi, if you like a Yaris get one, they are supposed to be really good wee cars. I had a Clio and could recomend it highly, I loved it, its actually for sale just now but im afraid im up in glasgow! I got a RAV 4 so would also recomend the Toyota! I wouldnt get a brand new one though because the chances are, you will wreck it. I wrecked my first car, i thought it was invincible and wasnt very nice to it. Between crashing into BMW's and driving through fields I was really glad I hadnt paid a lot of money for it when i took it to get it fixed and they told me it was a death trap and would have to go to car heaven.

I would let people know you are looking for a car, especially anyone you know who might work with cars, mechanics etc. and see if they come up with any good deals or get something out the Auto Trader, you might get something cheaper this way. Look around though, go to dealerships and see what they are offering, warranties etc. Also, try and take someone who knows what theyre talking about when it comes to cars to check it all over for you, thats the best bit of advice! They should be able to tell you if there is anything seriously wrong with a car. If its only a couple of years old and has ok mileage, chances are it will be fine, also check previous owners, stay away from something which has 6 previous owners, chances are its the cars fault!!

look for dealers with packages with long warranties, also name brand dealers are better than small time dealers for a lot of reason stability and records, also always negotiate never accept the first deal always make an offer lower than the one that is listed

When you see a car you like, call the rac or aa to check it over.
It will cost, but better to be on the safe side.

Check the pedals for excessive wear.
Same with the steering wheel.
Check the mileage and make sure it corresponds with that on the vehicles MOT certifate, you could also compare this to another car the same model on the internet, to make sure it's not excessive for the car's age.

You can use this website to check the book price for a make, model and year of car. Think they also tell you an average mileage.
Being a woman, the more information you can find out prior to going and looking, the better you will get treated. If you try the little woman act (works when your car breaks down!) you will just get screwed over. Find out your facts first and be confident.

If you are buying a used car show it to a mechanic for inspection. Make sure the previous owner has done all the maintenances. Check for the reviews online. Yahoo Auto is a good source. Warranty is important. Test drive the car and make sure you like the handling.
