Question:
I'm just about to buy a used car and would like to trade in my current car as part of that process. My current car title is co-owned - both my name and my dad's name are on it. His home address is on the title since I got it when I lived there.
My question is: Does he have to be present when I trade it in? Or sign anything in advance? It could be tricky because I live far away from him now. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!

Most states he can sign his title and have it notarized in advance; check with the DMV in state you will be trading as what they recognize as legal signatureCan someone explain car financing?
Your dad needs to release interest in the vehicle. He can sign on the title, in the area provided, or he can sign a release of interest, notorize it, and mail it to you. The release would need to describe the auto, make, model,yr. The VIN, and then a short statement, that he has no interest, and is receiving nothing from the sale. He releases his interest, on t his day, yada, yada. If the car is less than ten years old, he will need to sign an odometer disclosure, stating the mileage and signing the document as a seller. You can get the forms, and your dad can sign and get notorized, then mail back to you, so you can transfer the vehicle properly. You should check with your state licensing agency for further info, all states vary widely on what is required, no sense wasting time and effort with the answers there. Good luck.More Questions & Answers ...
