Car that is kid and environment friendly?

I'm in the market for a car but I don't want a gas guzzler with the high gas prices but I also want one with a high safety rating and kid-friendly specifications but also not a mini-van since its just me and my son. Any clue as to what would be the best option?

A sedan is the best bet as far as low cost, A well tuned up car that runs good with 80K is environmentally friendly as it gets. A 80k car that no one had kept up with is not.
