With a dealer, you have taxes, fees, and gross profit combined with a higher APR (all used cars have slightly higher apr, but this compounds the problem when you buy it from a dealer) that completely negate ANY depreciation savings, and in more cases than not, will put you in a far worse shape than buying new.
Or you can buy a car such as a Scion, Camry, or Accord that doesn't depreciate anywere near as quickly as domestic cars or other Asian cars.
Suzuki, Kia, and Hyundai have the worst depreciation (in that order) of the Asian brands. Suzuki's depreciation is on par with that of a used bucket of poo.

That depends on different factors. Are you paying cash, financing?I would go with pre-owned because the depreciation was absorbed by someone else. If you go this route. buy a car that is only a couple of years old, that still has warranty. Make sure the kind of car you buy has a good dependability and reliability record. Maintain your car and it will last and the re-sale value will be good.
pre-owned....already broke in and tested tough... new even with a "new car warranty" you gotta do without whilst they fix the bugs every new car has...i would feel better driving across the country in a car that has made the trip a few times as opposed to seeing if'n a new car will make it without using the warranty

the money you lose on a new car is crazy, especially when you can seek out a pretty new vehicle (like 1 -2 years old) that is just like new with warranty that is thousands of $ cheaper. The only honest perk on brand new is being able to say it's brand new and that doesn't last long. (I just bought my 3rd new and once again am kicking myself)The only advantage to buying a new car is the special low/no interest rates some car companies (such as GM) offer. Usually, these offers are on cars nobody wants.

It depends...new cars depreciate thousands of dollars the minute you drive it off of the lot. New cars sometimes offer better financing though. Some offer 0% or low interest rates (if you qualify). You can usually get a better deal this time of year, since they are making room for the newer models.On the other hand, if you buy used there are pros and cons also. You won't be taking such a hit on the depreciation but you may be purchasing a car that has been wrecked or damaged in some way. Or one that wasn't maintained properly by the previous owner.

Look into purchasing an extended warranty if you buy used. Consider what type of warranty is left on the car and how long you plan on keeping the car. Also look at what is covered on an extended warranty versus the mfg warranty. Some offer bumper to bumper and some cover only certain problems.

I would do a visual inspection of the undercarriage. I know someone who purchased a beautiful truck that had major rust damage under it....and it wasn't that old. Especially if you live in the north or the car was previously owned up north.

Buy a certified pre owned vehicle if you buy used. They go through more intense inspections before they are sold.

Never, never buy a new car from a dealer. The minute you drive off the lot, you lose thousands of dollars. Test it out. Buy a car, drive it down the street to another dealer, and ask to trade it in. What would they give you? Thousands less. If you try to sell it on your own, another buyer would try to cut your price out of fear of buying a bad car.
You could buy an '06 car from a reputable used car dealer, and pay a little less. But the best place I have heard of so far is http://www.ThatsMyNewCar.com. They are a used car dealer, that hunts for the car you want, and passes it along for the trade-in/ dealer price. It sounds pretty good to me as long as I get a warranty and a CarFax history report.
A used car, as long as it wasn't beat to heck, would absolutely be the best way to go. Let someone else take the huge depreciation hit.
