2002 - 2006 Honda CR-V - $11,000 - $22,000, 5 star frontal and side crash test rating(ctr) 21/26 mpg
2002 - 2007 Acura MDX - $21,000 - $36,000, 5 star frontal and side ctr and rollover, 17/23 mpg
2002 - 2004 Toyota Sequoia - $19,000 - $27,000 5 star front/side ctr 14/18 mpg
these are just some of the higher safety ones. I would stick with anything that isn't amercian ,but your best bets will be honda/acura and subaru, who is known for their safety.

or a close second is a 1986-1990 bronco II. i have one now. its awesome. and affordable to fix. both suvs very safe in crashes.

The Suburu Outback, or Forester. Expecially if you live up north. My wife had a Legacy and was stoped to turn left, when a F350 pickup, with a trailer full of wood slammed into her car at 60mph. The truck hit square and solid, drove right up onto the car. The car was totaled, but the passenger area was completely intact and she only suffered minor injuries. This was only a medium size car, a larger SUV would have been even better... I Trust Suburu with my wife, and BOTH my daughters....

We have two kids, 13 and 10 and drive a 2000 Honda CR-V, great all wheel drive with lots of room in back seat. One of the best on gas for AWD SUV, very safe and reliable. It has 2 anchor points for child seats in back seat. Happy shopping.
