make sure it's not missing out, not smoking, no engine lights are on, check to make sure there isn't any rust underneath (floorboards etc.) no musty smell on the inside, (could be water damaged) if the carpet has a discoloration (different colors) rips in carpets or seats, check trunk for water (leaks), if doors open an shut smooth, check front (all) tires for wear on inside an outside, ask for a car fax on the car. or you can get the vin number an run it yourself. while driving it check for brakes when braking, if it pulls to the left or right when u let go of the steering wheel, while the car is running u can take the oil cap off and see if there is any smoke coming from there (if so it has blowby) not good. check abs braking on a dry surface hit the brakes hard if it chatters (vibrates) then there working, check motor mounts to see if there straight, under the hood upper strut towers for rust (caravans/minivans). cv joint if it clickes when turning a sharp turn, (may need new cv boots or an axel), srs lights on (means air bags had been deployed) and was in a wreck. if the service eng light is on means possibly some sensors are bad (and some of them are not cheap, check for sluggish take off could mean transmission problems, listen to the motor for strange sounds (knocking, tapping) on exceleration have someone give it gas and you stand out side an listen for any knocking noise (could mean rodbears, rist pins, main bearings). or take a mechanic with you or take it to someone you know that knows cars. and always buyer beware, and good luck on buying a used car.
