i am looking at buying a 1997 vw jetta is there anything i should know before buying this car? is it a good car?

No one knows for sure, we haven't seen it or heard it. I would advise taking the car to a mechanic and have him check it out. In fact there are businesses that will come to your home and thoroughly inspect the car. They will remove all four wheels check suspension, engine, brakes, if it's been wrecked before. I saw one inspector spend 8 hours checking out a car my neighbor was going to buy.
Have the seller to agree to fix any faults the inspector finds or if not then have them pay for the inspection. It's cheap insurance for you.
