I don't think Honda will surpass Toyota in the near future. It still has to get past Volkswagen Automotive Group, Ford Motor Company, DaimlerChrysler Corporation, and soon General Motors to get to Toyota in sales, and its lineup isn't any more reliable or better built than Toyota's (currently, according to the Fortune 500 list, Honda is in sixth place in automobile manufacturers).Which is the best tool to find out the value of your trade-in when purchasing a new car?
I think the Honda versus Toyota rivalry isn't quite as similar as the Nissan versus Toyota rivalry. In order for their to be a true rivalry, there has to be similar models competing. For instance, for every Chevrolet model, there is a similar Ford model in the same category around the same price with the same options (Camaro/Mustang, Silverado/F-Series, Trailblazer/Explorer, Cobalt/Focus, Malibu/Fusion, Impala/Taurus, etc.).

Honda and Toyota compete in some categories, but their models differ too much. About the only similarities in models are the Pilot/Highlander, Fit/Yaris, Accord/Camry, and Odyssey/Sienna. Honda's S2000 doens't have a Toyota competitor, and neither does it's sporty Civic SI (there's no performance Corolla). Toyota has two trucks, the Tacoma and Tundra, available with a wide variety of engines, cab configurations, and drive systems. Honda has one, the Ridgeline, and it comes just one way, as an All-Wheel Drive, V-6 crew cab. Same with the SUV lines, in which Toyota has five and Honda has two (the Element's more of a tall, boxy, station wagon). Three of Toyota's are good off-roaders with true 4-Wheel Drive systems and several engines to choose from, while Honda's once again only come one way, as All-Wheel Drive and with one engine option and four doors.
