I think its a throw-back to the bad old days, when there were stockpiles of unsold new cars rotting in fields. Everyone has a huge choice of specifications these days, and to churn out thousands of (say) your chosen spec, would be commercial suicide. They are virtually built to order these days. If you had less choice of engine, trim, packages, etc. you could probably drive straight out the showroom in your new Ford.(edit! ) as an afterthought, the fact that we in the UK are clinging lovingly to Right Hand Drive probably doesn't help either!

Fords are built all over now, and depending on model, an order can take anywhere from 4-20 weeks. It sucks but unfortunately that is the way american car companies are.
