If you want a good track or autocross car, you could get a Miata and throw a turbo kit on it if you want more power. You can pick up a nice 2nd gen (FC3S) RX-7 within that budget.

If you want something a bit larger, an e30 BMW could be a good choice. They have (supposedly) have bulletproof engines, plenty of aftermarket support, and a cult following. Only down side to the bimmer is that they are being sought for spec racing, so that may prop the price up a bit, there are plenty within the $5000 range. You can probaby get a decent MKIII Supra within your budget.
If you want some mid-engine fun and exotic looks, check out the 2nd gen Toyota MR2. However, may be more difficult to work on.

If you want to go a bit 'old skool', check out a Mustang 5.0 or a Mitsubishi Starion.
If it were me, a $5000 fun car for the weekend would probably end up being a Porsche 944... maybe another RX-7 (used to have one, they're a blast).

I would buy a 1987-1993 Ford Mustang 5.0. You can find some really nice cars in that price range. In very nice cond. Try to find one thats not too modified though.RWD cars that maybe fit your budget

240 isn't all that fast but it does fit your budget. Miata's can be that cheap but b/c the displacement is so small even turbo-charging has limitations. If you are limited to 5k then you kind of have to look at some old cars. The mk iii Supra will have the most potential of the candidates. If you can find a turbo mk iii you will have a very strong engine with a lot of potential. A V8 mustang is tough to beat as well. Any BMW is going to be relatively expensive to buy and much more expensive to maintain or modify. If you can get a six cyl BMW that will be the best handling and braking of all the choices.what would be a good 90's rear wheel drive car for cheap?
Try to find a 240sx with an sr20det swap. This will be a good platform to start with. Depending on how or where you put your money will be the deciding factor if it is fast going straight or cornering. There is soo much of an aftermarket for parts for this car that you can keep modifying it depending on your budget and needs. Budget wise, you'll get way further with a 240sx than a BMW.Anyone know of a good place to buy a car in PA?
You can find LT1 Camaros and Firebirds all day long for $5000 that should turn high 13 low 14 second 1/4 mile times and parts for those are very cheap and plentiful, same goes for a Mustang GT or LX 5.0, they're just not as fast as the f-bodies. It's gonna be tough to find a fast rwd import for that price that's already put together, plus those things sound like weed eaters anyways.More Questions & Answers ...
