This will be a brand new car, so I don't think smog fees apply. Am I missing anything else besides these? How much do you think I will end up paying total?

The trick here is you have to study the invoice line by line. Dealers are sometimes too clever and slip in fees here and there to make extra money off of you.

Generally, in CA you pay "tax, title, and license". Tax is 8, 8.25, or 8.5% depending on location as some counties and cities levy additional sales tax. I am not sure if you have to pay for a luxury tax on a vehicle of that price.

There may be a delivery / destination charge, about $300-500, that's pretty much unavoidable. It's basically the cost of delivering that car from factory to your dealer.

Which is a better buy - Pajero or the Nissan x-trail (base model without sunroof etc )?

Title and registration is dependent on the sale price. I don't have the formula handy, but I'm sure the dealer will show you the paperwork.

what are the possible questions that will hover round my mind when I go to buy a Car?

Just don't get taken for "dealer prep charge" (basically a car wash and tire shine) and "underbody anti-rust treatment" (cars are already guaranteed for rust for 5-yr/60K at least, unless you're on east coast with lot of snow and salt) Ask them to explain each line of fee and if it doesn't sound right, ask for an alternative, like "can I go to DMV directly?" and such. Which should scare them into removing that line.

Also - luxury tax fees. No smog test required on newer cars for the first 4 years. (add about 10% to your purchase price for the Bay area) and add about $500-800 more for the luxury tax.
