1. Pull the dip stick. The oil should never be BLACK or smell like gas. Brown is OK, but never black. If the stick has a brown stain on it, run fast. It means the oil was RARELY changed.
2. Look at the bottom of the radiator cap (cool or cold engine only) it should be clean and free of rust or any gunky crud.
