If you want no problems while you are making payments,get Toyota or Honda.

Last year I bought a 2000 Mercedes Benz ML320 for $17,500. I had to look for a while to find one with 45,000 miles, but it looked and drove like it was showroom new. It comes standard with all the safety features you pay extra for on most vehicles, like front AND rear side airbags, stability control and full time four wheel drive. It is a Benz, so it will go 200,000+ miles, plus it is a luxury vehicle. Maintenance and repair cost a little more, but still reasonable IMO. Drive one and see if you like it, too!

Probably a Honda Pilot or a Toyota Highlander. They are reliable, hold their values well, have high owner satisfaction and are of unibody construction. You give up off road prowess, but you get much better handling, ride and fuel economy. The Pilot has consistently won every test it has been in. The Toyota design is a little older and not as much fun to drive, but should run almost forever.

How much will carmax give me for my car?

A Nissan Murano is a good choice too. They are more sporty, and the styling is a little more distinctive. It will ride a little harder, and cargo space is not as good. Reliability is also not quite as good, and that is the only real drawback.

Any domestic, and I do mean any domestic (Ford/GM/Chrysler) will not be as reliable or refined. You typically get an old V6 built on a truck frame with tupperware interiors. Reliability is usually poor and depreciation is high (interiors/motor quality opinions are subjective, but resale and reliability trends are fact).
