What kind of car can be leased for a really low monthly payment?
Matrix is going to give you better fuel economy than the RAV4 and better handling, it also costs less.Have not seen PT Cruiser this cheap!?
The RAV4 will have more power generally speaking and better ground clearance if you actually plan on driving on dirt roads and through unplowed snow.
If you don't need a wagon-type vehicle I would suggest the Corolla over the Matrix. It's the same car, only it's a few hundred pounds lighter so it is faster and gets better fuel mileage and it should be a little less expensive.

If you expect to drive in unplowed snow more than once in a rare while or want to go bounding down dirt roads then you want the RAV4.

If you are more likely to be using it for commuting most of the time and driving in town, then the Matrix XR or the Corolla would be a more practical choice.

The RAV4 V6 is a rocket though and the RAV is one of the better handling small SUV's. If purchase price and gas mileage aren't primary concerns here then the high end V6 RAV4 is a really nice vehicle that does a lot things very well with few compromises.
