Go for a VW Passat. Less likely to have been thrashed than a Golf. Plus more room for child accessories. A-Class, you could end up with one of the dodgy early ones with the steering/falling over problems.Don't buy A Class Mercedes Benz!

I'd go for the A Class Mercedes. My mother had a VW Beetle that had various components die on her before the thing had 40,000 miles on it, and VW did absolutely NOTHING to stand by its product. The end result was they told my mother she would have to take it in to the dealer and pay close to $3,000.00 to get everything fixed. And that's not the only story I've heard about VW vehicles being unreliable, nor is it the first story I've heard about VW's atrocious customer service. Go with Mercedes Benz. They have a much better reputation for reliability.Would you not rather a Polo? They have more boot space than a Golf. Since you only have one child you don't need a Mercedes which is not as economical as a smaller car. Esp since you only need to get around locally, there's no need to spend all of it on a big car, put the rest of the money on spoiling yourself and your child on a day out!!

The first version of the A Class was critisised for poor quality interior (not up to Benz standards), and harsh ride because of the stability control (to prevent it falling over, as happened during the "elk test").
