What is the average mileage for a car?
that's sort of like comparing apples to oranges...sedans will be better on gas to start. if comparing within just one make, sedans will most likely be less expensive (like a nissan altima to a nissan pathfinder). with suvs you will have more room...more room to transport large items (fold down seats)...possibly more seating (7) with a third row...most suvs have SOME towing capacity...handling in an suv can be tricky and you can't whip around an suv like you can a car...the feel of the ride will be bumpy-er in general in an suv but a lot of maufactuers have worked on that and the difference is slight...most suvs have optional 4 wheel drive which is good for snowy/icy conditions...you have the heightened possiblility of rolling over in an suv...but you also have the "safety" of being in a larger vehicle in case of a wreck (some people feel safer in a bigger vehicle). sedans are more economical in the long run. they will cost you less in price and gas. if you are not hauling/towing or have a large family to accomodate, a sedan should be enough. some people just like the idea of being in a bigger vehicle for safety. i like driving bigger vehicles for the fun feel of being up high and seeing what's up ahead. i don't own one though. i like sedans for the "sporty"-ness of them...i.e. speeding. i would own a suv if it wansn't for the prices. if you can afford an suv but don't need the room/towing/etc. then get a sedan with all the bells and whistles (leather/sunroof/upgraded audio...etc.)japanese manufactuers generally create quality cars that last. toyota or nissan. i am also partial to ford as well though i have never had an experience with a high mileage american car. toyotas and nissans are known for lasting through high miles.
