I'd say putting 1000-2000 is good down payment. First I'd look over the body and check out if there are any dents and dings and look to see if the car has been repainted in any places. You can spot them out by looking for dirt nibs, mismatched color, and/or tape lines. Look under the hood for oil leaks and other things that might look unusual. Look for stains or other abuse inside the vehicle. A big stain could mean that the person who owned it before was careless and didn't keep good car of it. A scratched up or clawed dash could mean that an animal was transported with them from time to time. Another thing before you buy, do some research on the model of vehicle you are interested in. Take the extra time and try to find the best deal for your budget.
